San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Greg Maddux's streak of 59-plus innings without walking a batter ended Tuesday in the third inning during the Padres 5-3 win against the Pirates, when he issued a free pass to Jason Bay on a full count.
At officially 59 2/3 consecutive innings, Maddux equaled his second-longest such streak of his career. In 2001, he set a National League record by going 72 1/3 innings without a walk.
Prior to Tuesday, Maddux's last walk came when he put Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt on base in the second inning of a July 28 game at Houston. He then went his next nine starts - 244 batters - without a base on balls.
