Beijing, China (Sports Network) - World No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport were among Thursday's second-round winners at the $600,000 China Open.
The second-seeded Jankovic double-bageled helpless Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-0, 6-0, while the unseeded Davenport won her seventh straight match by handling eighth-seeded Greek Eleni Daniilidou 7-5, 6-3. Davenport beat Daniilidou in the first round at last week's event in Bali, which marked the American's return to the WTA Tour.
The 31-year-old Davenport titled last week in Bali in her first tournament in nearly a year. The three-time major singles titlist, who gave birth to her first child back in June, stunned the Serbian Jankovic in the quarterfinals last week.
In Friday's quarterfinals here, Jankovic will take on Japan's Akiko Morigami, while Davenport will encounter fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva. The two-time major runner-up Dementieva drubbed Austrian teenager Tamira Paszek 6-2, 6-0, while Morigami handled her fellow Japanese Aiko Nakamura 7-5, 6-3.
The other quarters will pit third-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo against Chinese Shuai Peng and sixth-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay versus Argentine lucky-loser Maria Emilia Salerni. Mauresmo was last year's Beijing runner-up to Svetlana Kuznetsova, who pulled out of this year's event on Wednesday due to an injury and was replaced in the draw by Salerni.
The 2007 Beijing titlist will collect $88,265.
