Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros announced the hiring of Ed Wade as the team's new general manager on Thursday.
Wade served as the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2005 before he was relieved of his duties. He was the only one of 11 candidates that the Astros brought in for a second interview.
Wade is largely responsible for drafting several of Philadelphia's current All-Stars, including Chase Utley, reigning NL MVP Ryan Howard, and left- hander Cole Hamels. He returns to the Astros' organization after serving as the team's public relations director in the 1980s.
Wade takes over for Tim Purpura, who was fired on August 27 along with manager Phil Garner. Houston, two years removed from a World Series appearance, is one game ahead of Pittsburgh for last place in the NL Central with a record of 67-86.
