Carson Palmer will make his long-anticipated return to the playing field tonight, as the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback leads his team into a preseason matchup with the Green Bay Packers at Paul Brown Stadium
Palmer sustained a torn ACL, MCL, and dislocated left kneecap last Jan. 8th, when the 2003 Heisman Trophy winner was hit by Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen on the second play of an eventual 33-17 loss in the AFC Wild Card round. The season-ending injury, which required months of subsequent rehabilitation, put a damper on what had been a Pro Bowl season for Palmer. The USC product threw for 3,836 yards during the 2005 regular season, leading the NFL with 32 touchdown passes and a 67.8 completion percentage. Finally able to face live action, Palmer is expected to play no more than a half versus the Packers.
With Palmer unavailable in the Bengals' first two preseason outings, Anthony Wright (18-of-35 passing, 200 yards, 2 TD) and Doug Johnson (19-of-28, 261 yards, 2 TD) were able to engineer victories over the Redskins (19-3) and Bills (44-31). Wright is listed at No. 2 on the team's depth chart at quarterback, is expected to follow Palmer in the lineup on Monday night, and would likely start the team's regular season opener in the event of a setback to Palmer over the next two weeks. Elsewhere on the Cincinnati injury front, linebacker and 2005 first-round draft pick David Pollack (hamstring) is slated to see his first action of the 2006 preseason on Monday night. Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle and offseason acquisition Sam Adams (knee) is considered questionable for the Green Bay game, as is wideout Chris Henry (hamstring). Running back Chris Perry (knee, ankle) is among the notable Cincinnati players who will be out.
