By Ant Evans: A year ago, Calvin Brock signed to fight for a version of the heavyweight championship against Vitali Klitschko. A masterful PR attack by Alan Hopper of DKP managed to mobilize public opinion against Brock as an opponent in favour of Hasim Rahman and, just like that, the piece of paper the unbeaten 2000 Olympian had signed became just so much waste of rainforest.
However, Klitschko v Rahman didn't happen, either, because Vitali soon retired after a flurry of injuries. So Rahman was handed the WBC belt after a dismal effort against Monte Barrett.
Rahman went on to have big fights with James Toney (draw) and Oleg Maskaev (lost) while Brock continued locked in a holding pattern waiting for his title chance.
Fast forward a year, and Brock is again close to a world title opportunity v a Klitschko, in this case younger brother and IBF champ Wladimir. As talks continue, the North Carolina puncher will hoping history doesn't repeat itself and his mooted November 11 shot disappears before his eyes just like last year.
The fight has not been signed, but a deal is expected to be reached by the weekend.
"It's not 1000% done," joked one source close to the situation. "But it is close."
That's a reference to Shannon Briggs, who thought he had a deal in place to fight Wladimir, winding up going with DKP for a WBO title challenge.
Brock is a much better opponent for Klitschko than Briggs, though.
Brock may have looked decidedly average - if not boring - last time out against Timor Imbrigamov but a man who beat Jameel McCline is surely preferable to a man who was beaten by McCline
